John W. Heaviside —–––– Oliver Heaviside

Is there a connection?
As a career radio engineer, and bearing in mind that the Heaviside Layer is important for some types of radio communication, I have frequently been asked “Are you related?”

The answer is - probably!

I have been able to trace my ancestry with certainty to a Richard Hevisyd born in a small hamlet in County Durham in 1646.  Other researchers, to whom I am indebted, have traced Oliver’s line to a Francis Heaviside born in the same hamlet in 1660. It is virtually certain that these were brothers, offspring of another John Heaviside.  The family seems to have been quite prosperous, owning a lot of land.  Later 18th century generations occupy a crypt tomb right beside the door of the local church.
It is equally likely that we are related to yet another John Heaviside who was surgeon extraordinary to King George III. There is strong evidence that he is descended from the eldest brother of the family. Sadly, neither I nor any near relations are that exalted!
